Meat, Root, Vegetable, Fruit. If that’s on your plate, you’re good to go.
These words were first uttered to me when my assistant and I (she also eats Paleo and has lost more than 120 pounds over the past year and a half) were traveling from Portland to Seattle and I’ll never forget the sense of ease that first enveloped me when she said it.
Meat, Root, Vegetable, Fruit…
Four words that encapsulate a way of eating that has seemed to sway into more internal debate on the particulars of the diet versus the true aim of the lifestyle…to eat healthier. Simple. If it’s not a meat, root, vegetable or fruit, don’t eat it. Or, if you do, minimize.
A Chop Salad doesn’t exactly fit this mold because there’s blue cheese crumbles on a classic Chop Salad. A Chop Salad’s taste experience simply isn’t the same without blue cheese crumbles. In my Paleo Lifestyle Design, I eat them without regret. The tablespoon of this delightful mold makes the salad sign. While not ‘orthodox paleo’, that tablespoon of blue cheese crumbles represents a ‘treat’. Prior to Paleo Lifestyle Design, that ‘treat’ was a slice of pie, a few bourbon and Cokes, cookies, etc. Now its blue cheese crumbles. 20g of blue cheese contains the following nutritional information according to the USDA:
Calories : 60
Fat: 5.5
Carbohydrates: .75
Fibers: 0
Protein: 4.2
Kill me, I’m a paleo sinner. I ate a tablespoon of blue cheese this month.
As a disclaimer, there will be detractors to this ode of “Meat, Root, Vegetable, Fruit”. Because of this ‘feeling’ of being slightly less than orthodox in my approach to Paleo, seems some have to yell ‘root’ as if it were a four letter word with another meaning entirely. So let me state the obvious.
Root vegetables are plant roots used as vegetables. Here “root” means any underground part of a plant. While I can pontificate what Grog ate just like anybody else with a zeal for the lifestyle, I have to assume that in pulling a plant out of the ground, he didn’t take a little nibble of the underground. Grog like root.
Root vegetables are generally storage organs, enlarged to store energy in the form of carbohydrates. They differ in the concentration and the balance between sugars, starches, and other types of carbohydrate. Of particular economic importance are those with a high carbohydrate concentration in the form of starch. Starchy root vegetables are important staple foods, particularly in tropical regions, overshadowing cereals throughout much of West Africa, Central Africa, and Oceania, where they are used directly or mashed to make fufu or poi.
Botany distinguishes true roots such as tuberous roots and taproots from non-roots such as tubers, rhizomes, corms, and bulbs, though some contain both taproot and hypocotyl tissue, making it difficult to tell some types apart. In ordinary, agricultural, and culinary use, “root vegetable” can apply to all these types. So I grow them and eat them with delight.
Another thing about ‘Meat, Root, Vegetable, Fruit‘: The foods listed are also in the order of the amounts I eat. Meaning, I eat more Meat than Root, more Vegetable than Fruit. See how easy this is? Meat, Root, Vegetable Fruit.
One final thing on what It’s Paleo and I developed with Meat, Root, Vegetable, Fruit…’The Egg’.
You’ll notice these four food groups are all wrapped up in the shape of an egg. Due to their protein content, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) categorizes eggs as Meats within the Food Guide Pyramid. But Homey don’t play that…
The Egg, despite being laid by females of many different species, including birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish, and have probably been eaten by mankind for millennia. Embryonated, Unembryonated and De-embryonated are terms generally used in referring to eggs or, in botany , to seeds. So the shape of an egg made perfect sense to house ‘Meat, Root, Vegetable, Fruit’ primarily because everything evolves from ‘the egg’.
The shell is ‘The Eggs’ protective layer. And, in my Paleo Lifestyle Design, my protective layer is Supplementation. A multi-vitamin, protein powders, BCAAs, Glutamine, and other supplements weave in and out of my Paleo Lifestyle Design with ease and with no burden despite the arguments made against. My protective layer is made of the supplements that guarantee that ‘Meat, Root, Vegetable, Fruit’ give me what I want: Optimum Health, Wellness, and Well-Being.
Want Some? Adopt ‘The Egg’, and it’s credo: Meat, Root, Vegetable, Fruit.
