There aren’t many people who’d say no to a pretty looking smoothie, a refreshing frappe or a velvety shake every now and then. I don’t frequently consume such beverages but I think for many they can be easy to make, quick meals. Of course, one must be aware of the amount of sugar/carbs in fruits and berries commonly used in such drinks. Something like a paleo smoothie made with banana, strawberry and coconut milk sounds very healthy but it is high in carbs and should be consumed in moderation.

The way I look at it is if I’m having a really active day or I’ve just finished a 60 minute kickboxing class or a hardcore crossfit WOD, and my next meal is nowhere in sight, then I will happily make myself a protein based smoothie with fruit and coconut milk. With something like vegetable based juices and shakes, you can be more relaxed but I wouldn’t make it a regular replacement for the actual whole vegies or you’ll be missing out on vital fibre.

Given that they’re fun to make, resemble a rainbow, and make a guilt-free treat,  I’ve compiled a list of the best paleo shakes, smoothies and frappes I’ve tried or would like to make in my kitchen. These are grain and gluten free, dairy free, with no refined sugar.

Before we start, here is a little guide to different types of blended drinks:

Shakes, also known as milkshakes and thickshakes, are cold, sweet drinks made with milk, ice-cream, ice and flavourings or sweeteners like chocolate sauce or fruit syrups.  Protein shake is well known in the fitness community.

Smoothie is a blended drink made with fruits or berries and various additions of crushed ice, yogurt, frozen fruit, ice-cream, milk, juices, honey and sometimes nut butters.

Frappé is a dessert, often a drink, made with shaved ice and fruit juices and purees.  Coffee Frappé is a popular summer drink.
